San Carlos was formerly called Binalatogan in 1587 and the first town founded by Dominican priests in the 1500s.  In 1764, the town was renamed San Carlos. San Carlos. It became officially a city on June 17, 1965. Currently, it has 86 barangays, making it the largest city in Region 1 of Pangasinan.

San Carlos is famous for being home to the oldest church in Pangasinan- St. Dominic de Guzman Parish Church. San Carlos is also famous for being the hometown of Eugenio Perez-- the first ever Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines. In terms of manufacturing industries, San Carlos is popular for its export quality bamboo handicraft products, beautiful bamboo pieces of furniture and bamboo cottages. In terms of festivities, San Carlos is best known for its grand Mango and Bamboo Festivals, respectively celebrated every last week of April yearly.
