Having just relished the success of the heartbreaking ‘Katsuri’, Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) is back with another promising masterpiece. This time, they will let us in the chaos and conflict down south, in Mindanao, and how children living in the midst of chaos are coping.

Batang Mujahideen

Batang Mujahideen will tackle the touchy subject of the lives of our Muslim brothers and sisters in the war-torn Mindanao. This play is made to tug heartstrings, initiate a social action, and bring out empathy from the audience.

Malou Jacob is the genius behind Batang Mujahideen, her work is written to shine a much-needed light on the lives of the children living in the middle of a conflict-ridden place.

Apart from carrying a story that strong, and a narrative that deep, TP decided to match the intensity of the playwright with experimental and non-traditional modes of theater production.

Guelan Luarca was tapped by TP to breathe life into the play. He is an artist, playwright, and Tanghalang Ateneo’s Artistic Director.

“This play hopes to be the catalyst of empathy and social action, this production also features AC, not only as actors and artists but as ethical, engaged researchers and citizens,” says Luarca.

The play will use documentary theater, devised theater, multimedia; movement and dance, traditional, experimental, and postmodern forms, research performance, and metatheatre to encapsulate the true emotions and tell the story as authentically as possible.

The team sought out guidance from Moro dramaturg and consultants from Mindanao in order to ensure that the piece will be a great and accurate representation of what is really happening in Mindanao.

“The audience will always be uncomfortably aware that this is a play, ,a performance, an interpretation of a reality we are honored to portray,” said Luarca.

Katsuri left a dent in our hearts and Batang Mujahideen will surely do the same damage to us.
