Princesa Eulalia Park | Things to do in Puerto Princesa City-Palawan
|Address:||Liwanag, , Puerto Princesa City, Palawan|
Named after Dr. Higinio Mendoza, the war hero of Palawan. His resistance to Japanese control led to his execution on January 24, 1944 at Canigaran Beach. His remains together with several unknown soldiers were interred into the memorial constructed at the far end of the park along H. Mendoza Street (also named after the Late hero). Situated within the city proper, the park is framed by beautiful Palawan Cherry Blossoms and age-old acacia trees and landscaped with ornamental plants. On the south side of the park is a Tabuan square where one can buy souvenir and novelty items. To get there, one can take a tricycle or multicab plying the Rizal Avenue route.
Tucked right in the center of Puerto Princesa City beside the old city hall, the Palawan Museum provides a good introduction as to why Palawan is truly a cultural and natural powerhouse. Some of the highlights of the museum are the replicas of the province's three National Cultural Treasures: the Manunggul Jar, the Tabon Man skullcap, and the Leta-leta yawning jarlet. The second floor showcases the various indigenous groups of the province and their material cultural artifacts. These groups include the Palaw'an, Tagbanua, and Tao't Bato, among others. The museum also features the richness of Palawan's biodiversity by putting on display hundreds of different shells, and taxidermized endemic animals such as the Palawan pangolin.
This cathedral is a historical landmark where Puerto Princesa's first mass was held in 1872. At that time, the Spanish expedition also proclaimed that the Immaculate Conception of Mary is the patroness of Puerto Princesa. Painted light blue, the cathedral has pointed symmetrical arches redolent of Gothic architecture. A parish was initially erected here, followed by the current structure built in 1961, almost a century later. The cathedral houses some of the finest examples of wood carvings found on the island, which were made by the craftsmen in the Iwahig Penal Colony.
