Iwahig Penal Colony and Farm | Things to do in Puerto Princesa City-Palawan
|Open:||Open daily, 8am - 5pm|
|Address:||Iwahig, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan|
The one-hour banca cruise along the pristine Iwahig River provides an enchanting encounter with thousands of fireflies. These fragile insects only thrive in healthy environments, away from pollution and noise, and usually come out at around 7 o'clock in the evening. Given the site's remoteness (roughly 45 minutes away from the city proper), far from the blinding city lights, the guides also take the time to tell travelers to look up and admire the starry sky, and even help them in identifying various constellations. The boat tour costs P600 and accommodates three people aside from the tour guide. Furthermore, there are souvenir shops, a modest buffet restaurant, and a big parking space on site. The operation of this low-impact, educational activity is handled by the locals of Barangay Iwahig as another Community-Based Sustainable Tourism initiative of the city.
Free to visit, this small and simple hot spring and nature park is operated by the local government. The water is quite hot and alkaline bubbling from the bottom of a slow-moving stream. It is collected in a roughly made shallow pool before it is piped into five covered pools, one of which is a kiddie pool. Swimming here is quite rejuvenating and relaxing, especially on weekdays when there aren't much visitors. Around the pools are manicured lawns with wooden and cemented huts and benches. There are no amenities in the site, save for shower rooms and a small convenience store. Drinking alcohol is prohibited in the premises.
Located in Bgy. Irawan, one can take a jeepney or a tricycle bound for Irawan stationed along Malvar Street or may hire a private vehicle to go there. The ride takes only 25 minutes to visit this joint project of the Philippine and Japanese governments. The Crocodile Farm is a showcase of successful conservation project. The farm breeds two endangered species found in the country including the endemic Philippine Crocodile. There is also a mini-zoo where the colorful Nicobar Pigeon, the raucous talking mynah, the elusive bearcat, and other animals found in Palawan are sheltered.
