One of the most popular sites in Jaro, Iloilo is the grand Beaux Art mansion built in 1928—the Nelly Gardens. Its gate serves as the entrance to the celebrated past, while the lush garden area creates the perfect preview to the tall white mansion hailed as Iloilo’s Queen of Heritage Houses. Its garden area and the La Joya Hall have been repurposed and now serve as event venues. Interested parties can avail of the mansion tour (minimum of 5 persons).
Being one of the three Angelicum Schools built in the 1970s, Angelicum School Iloilo easily eludes that ancestral vibe. What guests would easily notice upon entering the vicinity is the white and noble Lizares Mansion that is situated in an almost 2-hectare lot. It is a three-story heritage site that has a winding wooden staircase and grand bedrooms.
More than just its impressive style and architecture, mystery lives in the mansion as it was believed to have become a torture chamber during the Japanese occupation. Locals and tourists flock to this establishment every December as it displays a magnificent show of lights.
The warm, sweet scent of freshly made barquillos would always welcome patrons and guests of De Ocampo’s, a renowned house of Ilonggo delicacies since 1896. What many people don’t know is that this staple pasalubong actually began as a mere food experiment. Adding sugar and milk to “ostya” leftover, Jose and Bessie De Ocampo made a recipe that lasted through the years.
Other best sellers include toasted mammon, their version of biscocho, and pasencia. But they also offer a non-baked good that sells out quickly: the De Ocampo siopao.
Where to stay
The El Haciendero is a 28 room boutique hotel located in the historic Jaro area in Iloilo City. Jaro was once the home of several Haciendero families. The hotel boasts all the necessary amenities and facilities to ensure that your stay in Iloilo is a pleasant one.
The Hotel is extremely private for its guests because of its location. And because of its small size, it does not have the large volume of people who come in and out of the building. We do our best to make sure that when the guests arrive at the hotel, they can relax and not have to deal with large crowds or business of larger hotel chains.
A colonial style house built in the 1920’s restored to its original beauty is the first ancestral House in the heritage district of Jaro, Iloilo City to be converted to a Bed and Breakfast . Feel the nostalgic ambiance of aged wood carvings, iron grills and machuca tiled verandah. If you want to get a feel of the past, enjoy your homey stay at CASA TENTAY.
