For more than 40 years, the Original Biscocho Haus has been frequented by both locals and travelers from all over the world wanting to taste its wide array of delicious delicacies which include biscocho, barquillos, meringue, broas, toasted mamon, and tarts. Their signature butterscotch, a soft chewy pastry with a hint of sweetness, has also evolved through the years—from the original variant, its line now includes dates, mango, pineapple, and prunes. Upon the restoration of the flagship store, wood and steel elements, antique cabinets and accessories, Chinese pottery, and French windows were incorporated in the interiors and were later on applied to all 30 branches. Indeed, a trip to Iloilo wouldn't be complete without dropping by this pasalubong landmark!
The warm, sweet scent of freshly made barquillos would always welcome patrons and guests of De Ocampo’s, a renowned house of Ilonggo delicacies since 1896. What many people don’t know is that this staple pasalubong actually began as a mere food experiment. Adding sugar and milk to “ostya” leftover, Jose and Bessie De Ocampo made a recipe that lasted through the years.
Other best sellers include toasted mammon, their version of biscocho, and pasencia. But they also offer a non-baked good that sells out quickly: the De Ocampo siopao.
Madge Café is an iconic coffee shop in Iloilo located at the Lapaz Market. Decades have passed and they still use the same pre-war recipe concocted by Vicente de la Cruz. Aside from their strong Arabica coffee and delectable food, what sets the café apart is the ambiance of the place itseld. Far from contemporary coffee shops, Madge offers a very homey, laidback appeal. They also display the customized mugs of their regular customers which the owners deliver to the respective families once the patron has departed.
Where to stay
The El Haciendero is a 28 room boutique hotel located in the historic Jaro area in Iloilo City. Jaro was once the home of several Haciendero families. The hotel boasts all the necessary amenities and facilities to ensure that your stay in Iloilo is a pleasant one.
The Hotel is extremely private for its guests because of its location. And because of its small size, it does not have the large volume of people who come in and out of the building. We do our best to make sure that when the guests arrive at the hotel, they can relax and not have to deal with large crowds or business of larger hotel chains.
A colonial style house built in the 1920’s restored to its original beauty is the first ancestral House in the heritage district of Jaro, Iloilo City to be converted to a Bed and Breakfast . Feel the nostalgic ambiance of aged wood carvings, iron grills and machuca tiled verandah. If you want to get a feel of the past, enjoy your homey stay at CASA TENTAY.
