Tupig is a famous rice delicacy from Pangasinan. This stick rice cake wrapped in banana leaves can be bought in different towns. Laoac features two kinds of tupig - regular and black. Both are made with rice, sugar, milk, cheese, and margarine. The difference comes from the rice used. The regular tupig uses white rice from the local ricefields of Laoac while the black one uses black rice imported from the rice fields of Baguio. Each piece is sold for 5 pesos. You can also purchase a 1 box of 9 pieces for 50 pesos or a big box of 28 pieces for 150 pesos. If you want more variants of tupig, visit Laoac during their Tupig Festival where vendors line up on the streets to grill different tupig flavors.
The Fabric Remnants of Laoac started as a DSWD training program that blossomed into a thriving business for local women. There had been a total of 25 trainings since it started 2 years ago. There are now more than 20 indigent, out-of-school you, and battered women working at the center and earning for their families. The women would upcycle old clothes bought from the town’s “wagwagan” (thrift shops) into bags, pillow cases, rags, curtains, and bed foams. Items are sold between Php200.00-700.00. The factory and store is just a 3-minute walk behind the local municipal hall.
The Holy Cross Parish Church in Laoac is a town church founded back in 1981. It is located just 5 minutes from the town’s municipal hall along the national road leading to the more popular Manaoag Church. The parish church’s facade is a simple red and beige colored walls but upon entering, visitors will be welcomed by a golden altar in the middle featuring the images of Jesus on the cross, Mary Mother of Jesus, and St. Martin De Porres who is known for his work for the poor. The church celebrates the Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross every 14th of September.
