Limingaling | Things to do in San Jacinto-Pangasinan
|Address:||Sta. Cruz, San Jacinto, Pangasinan|
Mary Help of Christians Theology Seminary was the first Catholic seminary in Pangasinan. Its chapel and school building sit on a 2.7 hectare land. The seminary and chapel is open for everyone, making it a pilgrimage site especially during Lent. The seminary also features a 20-foot Mary Help of Christians statue, and a viewing deck that overlooks the Cordillera Mountain Range and the Lingayen Gulf. Established in 2013, the seminary is now known for scenic pre-nuptial photoshoots, which happen almost daily.
For only P10, you can bathe under the cool waters of Antong Falls--but only after you make it through the 30-minute hike comprised of streams, rice paddies, boulders, and a hanging bridge. The falls is multi-layer, and the hike becomes more of a climb as you draw nearer to the top, clutching on giant tree roots and sliding on rock walls. Along the way, you will spot clear streams cascading through stones and natural pools with a beautiful turquoise hue. Once you've reached the tallest cascade of falls--approximately 20 meters high--reward yourself with a refreshing dip on its pool, which is around 5-6 feet deep. Locals frequent this serene paradise to take a break and enjoy the quiet, but the area remains unknown to most, which lends an air of mystery and wonder to the place.
Sinakob is a famous dessert in Pangasinan, sometimes called panotcha or molasses. Free from preservatives or additives, the delicacy is made entirely from sugarcane juice. Families in Pozorrubio have made this their source of livelihood, and it is good to know that sinakob-making is being passed on to younger generations. The process is tedious, but entirely waste-free. After sugarcane juice has been extracted, they are poured into a vat to boil. The bagasse is used as firewood to boil the juice, and one worker makes sure the firewood is sufficient. Another worker mixes the boiled sugarcane juice, which becomes caramelized. There is a certain technique to mixing it seamlessly with a bamboo rod, and only an expert sinakob maker can do it with flair. The hot concoction is then poured into half shells of coconuts to cool and harden. It is not easy labor, but you can see the dedication these workers have for their craft.
