The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial bears witness to the true cost of war. With more than 17 thousand graves and 36 thousand names of the missing, this cemetery is the largest World War II graveyard in the world. The American Cemetery is laid out on a plateau at the Fort Bonifacio, overlooking city buildings, Laguna de Bay, distant mountains at the north, and the slums of Taguig. Composed of more than 16 thousand American and 500 Filipino troops, the graves are divided alphabetically into 11 burial plots, arranged into concentric rings. At the center of the rings is the American Memorial, which contains the chapel, the four rooms walled with 25 WWII mosaic maps, and the numerous limestone tablets engraved with the names of the missing. The chapel, also made of limestone, displays the relief sculpture of St. George fighting the enemy dragon.
Six imposing army trucks and tanks stand sentinel outside the Philippine Army Museum. Along with a range of artilleries, the open-air exhibit is a striking prelude to the two-storey museum inside. The museum keeps seven small galleries, the highlight of which is the Diorama gallery on the second floor.
The Diorama gallery is a life-sized representation of five of the most important events that shaped the Philippine Army's history. The five scenes are depicted in realistic wooden figures, staged in winding hallways that are spare, compact, and dark in some sections, lending an air of a military outpost. The dioramas chronicle milestones in the nation's struggle for freedom against foreign colonizers--from enlistment to the Sandatahan during the Katipunan, to the Liberation of Manila in 1945.
Founded in 1976, the Philippine Army Museum aims to record and preserve the history of the Philippine Army and its achievements.
Surrounded by skyscrapers, Ayala Triangle is an urban oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the business district Makati. Visitors can go jogging here, have a picnic, marvel at the public sculptures, or simply hangout. Coffee shops and restaurants also dot one side of the park, serving as a favorite hangout place among young professionals. With more than a hundred trees, Ayala Triangle is the largest park with the most number of trees in Makati City. At the corners of the park are three monuments: a statue of Benigno Aquino, the assassinated Martial Law Hero; of Sultan Kudarat, the Sultan of Mindanao during the Spanish era; and of Gabriela Silang, the revolutionary heroine from Ilocos during the Spanish invasion.
