As Calasiao is the “Puto” or Rice Cake Capital of the Philippines, the town’s Puto Market is a key stopover site to tasting and bringing home this local delicacy. Located across the municipal hall, the puto market comprise of numerous stalls selling local puto products and other delicacies. The rice cakes come in countless shapes, colors, sizes, and flavors. This area of the town is also home to Calasiao’s annual Puto Festival, held every December. Other than parades and street dances, the festival highlights the greatest puto-makers in town competing for the award of the best puto-based art masterpiece.

This Roman Catholic Church has been named National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines as well as the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The church was built from 17th to 19th centuries by the Dominicans, and is famous for its the well-preserved bell tower as well as its prized original retablos. Following the architecture of Baroque design, the church also features intricately painted ceilings, a majestic dome, and a magnificent carved exterior.

Did you know that the film Lord of the Rings acquired its large supply of swords from this factory? The fine metal pieces of swords are mastercrafted in Barangay Pandayan in Calasiao. It’s one of the finest pandayan factories in the Philippines, founded by former Professor Bernardo Roa in the 1970’s with a vision to provide jobs to people of his hometown. Touring this facility, visitors will see, among other things, how each sword is made by a group of three blacksmiths, alternately pounding on the heated sword in perfect timing and harmony. Today, the factory produces kitchen knives and about 100 “pandayan” or swords per day.
