Ayuntamiento de Manila in Intramuros | Things to do in City of Manila-Metro Manila

Nicknamed as the ‘Marble  Palace’, Ayuntamiento was once the seat of the high-ranking officials of Manila. It was the office of the City Alcalde or Mayor, the Judge and clerks. Inside the building are also government archives, and function halls like the salon de baile (ballroom) and the municipal board session hall.Like most places in Manila, the Ayuntamiento also suffered the wrath of earthquakes and wars several times, causing it to be rebuilt three times. However, it was still considered to be one of the most historic buildings in Intramuros, as it is the site of the First Philippine Assembly in 1907 and the Philippine Legislation in 1935. It was completely destroyed in the Battle of Manila’ in 1945 and was rebuilt again. Today, it houses the National Bureau of Treasury.

Originally intended to be a cemetery, the lot for this plaza was bought in 1627 by the Dominican order. The plaza is located in front of the original site for the University of Santo Tomas. Bought by the city government in 1861 to be a public plaza. It was then gifted to UST in 1879 where a statue of UST founder, Archbishop Miguel de Benavides was erected in 1891.
