Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral | Things to do in Sorsogon City-Sorsogon
|Address:||Rizal St., Brgy. Sirangan, Sorsogon City, Sorsogon|
The best way to start off the tour of Sorsogon City is to have a leisure walk around the Sorsogon Provincial Capitol Complex. The Provincial Capitol Building with its grand Roman Columns façade has been Sorsogon province's seat of government since 1916. The Freedom Park in front of it is a spacious plaza landscaped with trees and features a monument of Dr. Jose Rizal built in 1923. The area is an ideal place for those who are curious to take a peek into the city's local vibe. People-watching is especially great during afternoons and on weekends, when small groups flock to their own corners around the park for an activity or to just simply relax and chat. There's the occasional street vendor enticing people with their snacks, while the rest of the crowd are mere passers-by.
What used to be an old pier is now a kilometer-long baywalk with picturesque views of the sea and Mt. Bulusan across the bay. Rompeolas is now a tidy locale for enjoying strolls plus a few other activities like kayaking and, on special occasions, events like film screenings and concerts. Like the Sorsogon Provincial Capitol Complex, this spot provides tourists with plenty of opportunities to people-watch and interact with Sorsogoanos. If not on the baywalk, residents would likely spend the time lazily at the nearby food court enjoying street food and other popular merienda meals with friends or family. Late afternoons is when Rompeolas gets really crowded with people anticipating the sunset, which is particularly beautiful in this part of the city.
Aside from being a venue to avail of city government services, the Sorsogon City Hall grounds is open to the public for simple recreational activities. Located away from the bustling city center, the atmosphere here is calmer compared to the other public spaces found in the city. The park is nothing too grand but its manicured lawn is a pleasant enough place to unwind on late afternoons especially for families with small kids. The perimeter on the other hand is wide enough for exercise activities and is also an ideal place to run a few laps.
