Calapan City Plaza serves as a rotunda, in the middle of which lies a cemented gazebo. The gazebo is wrapped with a spiral staircase, leading to its rooftop. At the rooftop you'll find statues of a Mangyan next to a tamaraw, a dwarf buffalo endemic to Mindoro. The Mangyans are the indigenous people of Mindoro Island. Also found in this plaza are a relief sculpture of Mindoro and a monument of Dr. Jose Rizal, the National Hero. At the outskirts of the plaza, vendors sell refreshments and snacks. The plaza is located across Calapan's old City Hall, and next to the oldest Catholic educational institution in Mindoro, the Holy Infant Academy.
Four o'clock in the afternoon signals the start of Calapan Night Market. Food stalls, collapsible tables, beach parasols, and plastic chairs are set up on Sales Street, just next to the New Calapan Public Market. More than 40 food stalls make up the Night Market. The vendors offer lugaw (rice porridge), home-cooked meals, siomai, drinks, barbecue, liempo, isaw (grilled chicken intestines), balut (boiled duck eggs), and fruits. The place soon turns into a busy snack and dinner area that is open until 12 midnight.
Merl's Native Delicacies has its own version of the famous Batangas' suman sa lihiya (rice cake). Like the usual rice cake, it is made from glutinous rice (malagkit), mixed with lye water (lihiya), and wrapped in banana leaf. However, instead of the usual topping of brown sugar and grated coconut meat, Merl's rice cakes are eaten with coco jam. Merl's Native Delicacies has been producing and selling rice cakes since 2002. Merl's also distributes rice cakes to different stores in Calapan. The shelf life of Merl's rice cakes is two to three days at room temperature, up to a week when stored in the fridge, and up to a month when stored in a freezer. Merl's rice cakes are wrapped bite-size with a sachet of coco jam, and are sold in packs of 12 at P110.
