Colegio de San Juan de Letrán is an institution born out of two same ideologies, missions, and a bond of friendship. In 1620, Don Juan Geronimo Guerrero, a retired Spanish Officer, transformed his hermitage home into an orphanage called the Colegio de Niños Huérfanos de San Juan de Letrán, its goal is to house orphans and mold them into becoming better citizens. Around the same time, Colegio de Huérfanos de San Pedro y San Pablo was established by the Dominican brother Diego de Santa Maria at the Convent of Santo Domingo. Out of the same calling and purpose, these two friends decided to merge their institutions into one. In 1630, Colegio de San Juan de Letrán, an all-boys school was established. The institution permanently settled into their original site and is one of the two remaining original schools inside the walls of Intramuros.
The last gate of Intramuros to be constructed. It opened in 1861 to give way for the heavy foot traffic of people heading to Binondo. It then later became part of the tranvia (streetcar) route. The Puerta has chambers that were used as military houses, medical quarters and storehouses. The Americans demolished some of the sections of the chambers during their occupation. The chambers were destroyed during the 1945 battle, only 15 chambers are left intact.
The oldest distillery in the Philippines opened its doors to the public back in 2018 as a museum dedicated to the history of the Philippine liquor. Chinese merchant Lim Tua Co founded Destileria Limtuaco in 1852. Over the years, this distillery would become one of the best in the country. They were behind some of the most iconic drinks known today like Toska Vodka, El Hombre Tequila, Maria Clara Sangria, Orchid Lime Juice Cordial, and White Castle Whiskey.Inside the museum, guests would opt for something a little more than looking into displays. The museum offers an option for visitors to sample a few of their best liquor, including the 150-year old Chinese herbal wine, Siok Tong.
