San Francisco church was the mother church of the Franciscans. It was built in 1578 out of Nipa and bamboo. Fire engulfed the church but soon, a new stone church was built in 1645. It suffered an ill fate as a mighty earthquake shook the church to the ground. A third church was made in 1738 but then got caught between the war. The San Francisco Church was famous for its altar-like facade, a heavily decorated baroque-style retablo with corinthian columns and sprawling windows with heavy doors. It was once considered to be one of the best churches in Intramuros. Sadly, after the third reconstructed church succumbed to the war, it remained in the rubble with its war-torn facade. Today, the Mapua University stands in its site.
Another fortification built by the Spaniards in 1592, San Francisco de Dilao or Baluarte de Dilao was named after the Japanese suburbs that it was facing across Intramuros. It was enlarged in 1662 but it succumbed to the wars it faced. The current Baluarte de Dilao was the 1984 restored version, it was more spacious than the previous ones with the added space for Plaza de Dilao. Plaza de Dilao stands as a commemorative place for the lives lost during the bloody World War II.
Founded in 1952 by former president Jose P. Laurel, Lyceum of the Philippines University is still the only school in the Philippines to be founded by a president. Lyceum of the Philippines was the former site of San Juan de Dios Hospital. The hospital was built in 1578by Franciscan lay brother Juan Clemente for the people affected by leprosy.Soon enough, it was decreed for the hospital to open its gates for people from all walks of life, especially for the poor people, thus earning the name “Hospitals of the Indios”. Up until the American occupation, the hospital continued to serve its purpose, until it fell in ruins in the 1945 war.
