The one hundred seventy massive acacia trees are the asset of the UP Academic Oval. The trees flank each side of the elliptical road, stretching up into a roof of cool green. The canopy of acacia trees shade the runners, bikers, students, and passenger jeepneys below. The Oval measures 2.2 kilometers in circumference, with a dedicated bike lane and several cemented benches along its pedestrian lanes. Inside the Oval lies the Lagoon, a quiet hangout among lovers and bookworms, and the Sunken Garden, a multi-purpose spacious ground, sunken about 1 meter deep because of its limestone nature. Surrounding the Oval are the neo-classical buildings that make up the university's colleges, and several artworks. The most popular is The Oblation, sculpted by the National Artist Guillermo Tolentino. A few meters away from The Oblation, travelers can find more artworks at the Vargas Museum.
Located in the University of the Philippines Diliman campus, Vargas Museum is a four-story museum that specializes in Filipino art. The museum is surrounded with sculptures outside, with the Lapu-Lapu sculpture located in front and the Balanghay at the back. Inside, the Main Gallery displays artworks from the 1880s to the 1960s. It covers various mediums such as watercolors, pastels, oil paintings, sculptures, and art installations, from celebrated artists such as Lorenzo Guerrero, Simon Flores, Juan Luna, and Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo. The third floor is dedicated to the archives section, which is home to the Filipiniana library and the Vargas memorabilia. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center is named after Jorge B. Vargas, who donated his collection of art, coins, stamps, library, and personal papers to the University of the Philippines in 1978. The Museum Cafe sits just outside the building, serving caffeinated drinks, sandwiches, and pasta.
This interactive science museum features over a hundred hands-on exhibits to promote self-discovery. Divided to ten themed galleries, it is the perfect venue for educational activities recognized by the Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Tourism.Aside from the museum tour, the Philippine Science Centrum also offers trainings, seminars, and workshops to promote learning through science and technology.
In an effort to reach the rural areas, they formed Traveling Exhibits, which bring science education to other provinces in the country. These exhibits-on-wheels have traveled to over 150 towns and cities nationwide. Science enthusiasts, educators, and mentors outside Manila are encouraged to bring the Traveling Exhibits to their hometown by hosting one. This will create more opportunities for students in other regions and help bridge the gap of education in the country.
